Welcome and thank you for visiting this site .

Introduction

The following is designed to give you an idea of what we are about, and if I am being honest, to tempt you to try flat lawn green bowls at our club.

The outdoor season runs from the end of April to the first weekend in September – depending upon the weather.  We start with an Open Day in April and finish with our Finals Day in September.  The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017.  We have a reputation for being a small friendly club that produces a number of county level bowlers.

We try to offer members the type of bowling they want.  For example, we will have a club afternoon at 2pm on Tuesdays throughout the summer for anyone who simply wants to try their hand at bowls or to practice.

We run a Club Handicap league in order to get members used to playing competitive matches without the pressure of a league match and to learn the basic rules of the sport.  We usually end the evening with a cup of tea, biscuit and a chat.

We also run club knockout competitions, which again gets members used to playing competitively.

The club is entered into four different leagues this season.  This gives you a chance to pit your skills against a number of different bowlers with a wide variety of skill levels and a chance to travel all over East Yorkshire.

Costs

Our annual membership fee is £60 payable in April.  Reduced to £30 for new members in their first season. You also pay £3 each time you play in a match.

The entry fee for our club handicap league is £3 per match. There are no other costs.

Dress Code

For all competitive matches – county, league and club, you must wear a white shirt and grey trousers/skirt. Sweaters, jumpers, etc must also be white.  Proper bowls shoes must be worn on the green.  It is a good idea to have white waterproof gear and a hat to keep the sun and rain out of your eyes.

The bowls shop in Holme on Spalding Moor is good place to purchase all of your bowls gear at competitive prices although other retailers are available!

Within reason, you can wear what you like Club afternoons and when practising but please avoid upsetting the neighbours.

Equipment

You will need a set of 4 matching woods.  If you are a beginner it is better to borrow a set of woods before purchasing a new set. Second hand woods can be acquired relatively cheaply.

It is a good idea to have a small towel to dry your bowls off when it is raining as it helps you grip the bowls.  You can also purchase various potions, lotions and gloves that will also help you to grip your bowls in the wet.

Playing games and practice

As a member of the club you can practice on the green at any time after 1pm on week days and after 10am on weekends.

In the afternoons we play from car park side of the green (west to east and back) and in the evenings we play from the Club house to the village hall and back (south to north).  This avoids playing into a setting sun on an evening.   Surprisingly, the rinks are numbered 1 to 6 so that numpties like me can follow what’s going on.  Bowling west to east, rink 1 is the rink nearest the village hall.  Bowling south to north, rink 1 is nearest the car park.
